After more than 20 years, the last day of business at our 788 King Street location is Tuesday June 26th. 

Art Metropole will then temporarily close and re-open to the public on Wednesday July 11th at our new location at 1490 Dundas street west. (just west of Dufferin St.) 

Throughout this time our website (www.artmetropole.com) featuring our full inventory remains up and running and ready for new orders. We can also be reached at info@artmetropole.com

 

Our new location on Dundas is now open to visitors and the space is currently the site of an installation by the New York-based, Canadian artist Robin Cameron. The last day to see this exhibition is June 28th.

Conceived as a book expanded into an exhibition space, T-R-U-T-H  is the culmination of obsessive research referencing many disparate sources, ranging from short stories to cinema, and from hoaxes to philosophy. A web of connections is created around a single topic: Truth. These include short stories written by Lydia Davis, every film that Jean-Pierre Léaud has starred in, a hoax about a Temporary Tattoo that contains LSD, and the interpretation of Lacan’s theories about Lack. Book pages give the viewer insight into the individual works, each relating back to the overarching theme. With each exhibition of the project, T-R-U-T-H is considered an edition of a book in the making – with each version arranged slightly differently than the last.

If I Can't Dance, I Don't Want to Be Part of Your Revolutionwww.ificantdance.org is an itinerant group dedicated to exploring the evolution and typology of performance and performativity in contemporary art. Initiated in 2005 by curators Frederique Bergholtz, Annie Fletcher and Tanja Elstgeest they work from a spirit of open questioning and long term enquiry with artists, through long-term collaborations with artists, researchers and partner organizations, that  take form in two-year editions of commissioned productions that develop over time and are presented at different institutions in the Netherlands and abroad. Currently Edition IV is centred upon an investigation of affect and is anchored by commissioned projects by Jeremiah Day, Sung Hwan Kim, Wendelien Van Oldenborgh, Hito Steyerl and Emily Wardill.

If I Can't Dance defines its way of working as 'contemplation, interrupted by action', a quote borrowed from artist Hanne Darboven. Each edition is an ongoing process of research—of 'contemplation'—segmented by moments of presentations at the subsequent venues enabling public exchange - opportunities for 'action'.

One of the primary platforms for contemplation is the reading group organized by If I Can't Dance in conjunction with each edition. For the first time they have initiated a parallel reading group outside of The Netherlands that will take place in Toronto from September 2011 to February 2012 centred upon the research field of affect, hosted by Art Metropole and led by Jacob Korczynski.

Related publications by Sharon Haynes, Eve Kosofky Sedgwick, Henry James, Michael Hardt, Wendelien van Oldenborgh, Brian Massumi and others will soon be available at Art Metropole.

bsviv Books from Montreal and Shawn Kuruneru with Special Guests

Friday, Oct. 14, 2011 6:30-9 p.m. Art Metropole welcomes bsviv Books from Montreal & Shawn Kuruneru with Special Guests Join us for a special presentation of Shawn Kuruneru's most recent publication Women, along with contributions by Jimmy Limit, Julia Kennedy, Christy Kunitzky, Maggie Groat and Jesse Harris. Kureneru's Women is a 38 page collection of drawings produced in an edition of 300, 5 inches by 8 inches, full-color throughout, laser print, and perfect bound. Shawn Kuruneru has shown at The Drawing Center (New York, NY), Ribordy Contemporary (Geneva, Switzerland), Night Gallery (Los Angles, California) and Battat Contemporary (Montreal, Quebec). His drawings were recently acquired by the Montreal Contemporary Art Museum. Kuruneru has been reviewed by The New York Times, ARTFORUM, Artnet.com, The Village Voice, DOMUS and Border Crossings. BSVIV is a new publishing company based in Montreal, Canada dedicated to printing exceptional quality books with a focus on innovative visual sensibilities, DIY energy and creative freedom. Special Projects at Art Basel: Sebastian Butt

Here is what it looked like when Sebastian Butt and visitors to the Art Metropole booth engaged in all things Cheetoh at Art Basel this month.

 

Special Projects at Art Basel: Sebastian Butt

 

Canadian artist Sebastian Butt has been asked to participate in Art Metropole's new initiative Special Projects at Art Basel within their booth at Art 42 Basel, June 15-19, 2011. This year's Shopping Bag By Artists series has also been designed by Butt, along with a special edition tote bag.

Building upon the artist's previous works "Cheetoh Pin" and "Cheetohs Revised" Sebastian intends to actualize a new on-site project at Art Metropole's booth. For the duration of the fair the artist will be accepting commissions from the public. Your small to medium sized objects will be infected with Cheetoh and returned at a later date. A pricing structure based on a square inch rate will be determined by the size of the object submitted.

Sebastian Butt's sculptural objects produced while in residence at the Banff Centre will be on display and available for sale alongside multiples and books from Art Metropole's shop. On this occasion, the Cheetoh "travels from hyperreal to surreal, with a dominating force akin to a fungus, a parasite that takes over anything it touches. The objects accrued in Banff, have been tainted, alongside objects representative of Banff Idealism"¹. The Cheetoh envelops these objects partially, and in some cases, entirely, ruining the objects contained within them. The work of Cheetoh (or Cheezie) will be leaning, displayed on shelves and hanging, retaining the look of merchandise, while re-presenting the artificial snack food as an organic growth.
